If you're a mixtape person, a collection like "Yule Love Trop Rock" is pretty much a "must have". For a sub-genre like Trop Rock (or Parrothead music), it's not that there's nothing out there...just that what is out there is pretty scattered. There's Jimmy Buffet, of course. But, after that, its an obscure single here and a track from a Country or pop or Hawaiian album there. Having a Various Artist collection like this (21 tracks in all) is just so convenient and, frankly, economical. They'll be plenty of steel drums, here, and lots of Margarita music, for sure. It's a balmy Christmas, though, so don't expect an abundance of sleigh bells.
Many of these tracks are only available on this collection and this collection is only available from BeachFront Radio. Highlights on the collection start right at the top with Howard Livingston's "White Christmas In The Florida Keys". We're big fans of Roy Holiday at Stubby's, so it's great to see "Christmas On The Beach". We'd also include Coconut Radio's "Santa's Going To The Keys For Christmas", "Christmas Island" from Gary Phillips (Trop Rock Christmas music with kazoos!), Les Ker's "Jingle Bells", Tom Starkey's "Key West Santa" and Tall Paul's cover of NRBQ's "Christmas Wish". In short, there's plenty here to sink you're flip flops into. I do wish they'd managed to feature a few more female vocals, but Parrothead music tends to be male dominated (and I would have loved to hear a Trop Rock Hanukkah song).
A very limited number of hard copies will be distributed at BeachFront Radio events in Key West; for the rest of us, this is download only. You can purchase the set direct from BeachFront Radio for $9.99. Proceeds will benefit The Melanoma Research Foundation. Individual tracks are not being sold separately, so you'll have to purchase the full album.
